Building your brand from the inside
We live in a reputation economy where trust is the currency — and the most important group influencing that trust is your own workforce.
Colleagues are the lifeblood of your organisation, when they’re engaged, they can become your brand’s strongest advocates but if disengaged, they can quietly erode trust and reputation from within.
Employee engagement isn’t about checklists or flashy campaigns. It’s about creating a workplace where people feel that what they do matters, that they belong, and that the organisation is open, purposeful and authentic.
At Elevator, we’ve spent a couple of decades helping organisations translate purpose and brand values into meaningful internal communications. Here’s our seven principles for creating internal comms that engage and inspire your people:
1. Make it meaningful
Everyone knows what they do, but not always why. A higher purpose that is simple, inspiring, and easy to understand drives engagement, decision-making, and behaviour.
2. Tell real stories
Bring the organisation to life through stories from colleagues, line managers, and real customer experiences. Stories create connection, reinforce values, and make strategy tangible.
3. Be clear about outcomes
Internal comms should:
Inspire – show progress, celebrate achievements, highlight the impact of their work
Educate – explain the what, how, and why
Reinforce – repeat key messages across channels, integrating them into induction, training, and HR initiatives
4. Start a conversation
Engagement works best when it’s two-way. Encourage dialogue across teams, empower managers to cascade messages clearly and provide open feedback channels. Colleagues are likely to believe what they hear from their peers as well as respected leaders.
5. Keep the conversation alive
Avoid the “big launch and disappear” trap. Embed communications into daily routines across a mix of channels, and stay consistent in language, tone and style.
6. Be authentic
Ditch corporate speak in favour of clear, relatable language and emphasise the human face of your organisation. Give your colleagues a channel to share experiences, to build understanding, connection, and alignment.
7. Surprise and engage
Communicate where people least expect it. Social media, mobile messaging, and design-led materials can make internal messages memorable. Creative delivery demonstrates care and reinforces your culture.
At Elevator, we create internal communications that inspire and engage your workforce, whether you’re articulating a higher purpose, launching a change programme, communicating company values, or running HR initiatives.
We work collaboratively and our clients tell us that working with us is straightforward, rewarding, and enjoyable. That’s the kind of internal comms partner we strive to be: trusted, practical, and impactful.
